Débora da Rocha Werba, PT, PMA/CT
About Débora:
Débora da Rocha Werba is a Pilates Certified Teacher with 8 years experience teaching Pilates and a Physical Therapist with 5 years of clinical experience. Initially I worked in clinical rehabilitation, but after discovering the Pilates Method, I decided to dedicate myself exclusively to the Method. I fell in love with Pilates when I felt how it changed my body. After that, I decided to work with this Method and along with that came an opportunity to be a Pilates instructor at Vitta fitness center (Porto Alegre – RS – Brazil). I completed my comprehensive course through Power Pilates at Corper Studio and School (Porto Alegre – RS – Brazil) and after that I stayed working there. The Corper Studio created their own teacher training and I was invited by Master Teacher Trainer Aline Haas to participate. Today I am a Pilates instructor at Vitta and Teacher trainer of the Pilates course at Corper. |
Scientific work regarding Pilates:
Specialist Study: “Electrical Activity of Powerhouse Muscles During the Teaser Exercise of Pilates Using Different Types of Apparatus.”
Results importance:
The Pilates Method has several exercises for training each muscle group, with small differences between them. In past years, some of these particularities have been researched, learning how different loads influence powerhouse muscle activity in the Teaser exercise, which will give Pilates instructors new information to guide their decisions. The Teaser is usually introduced on the Cadillac or Wall Unit, with the springs’ assistance aiding the learning process of the movement (Rossi et al.,2014). From these results, the exercise on the Reformer, with an unstable base and spring resistance, offers an increased challenge to the external oblique muscles in relation to the exercise on the Mat. This is important data for determining what exercise will best emphasize specific abdominal muscle training.
All muscles showed higher EMG activity on Reformer compared with Wall Unit, and Multifidus, Adductor Longus, and Gluteus Medius showed higher EMG activity on Mat compared with Wall Unit.
Challenges in regards to research:
To combine studio practice with academic research.
Why Pilates?
Within Physical Therapist I always enjoyed working with the movement and I always had the conviction that the movement of the body brings cure and health. I felt it in my body and I liked that other people feel it too. Through the Pilates method I can work the health and wellness of my client through the global movement. Seeing all these benefits while working with Pilates, I want to continue in research to prove the effectiveness of the Pilates Method.
